My footie memories - Malc Storer

The 1966 world cup was really the start of my love of the beautiful game. Watched as many games as possible on the TV – then, with passion ignited and pocket money saved, made the momentous decision to go to the City ground to see Forest take on Newcastle Utd on Saturday 17th September. The home team won 3-0 and I was hooked! Saw almost every home game that season and travelled to many away games. Continued visiting the City ground for another couple of seasons but had to give up in 1970 because I’d left school and had taken a job in a local butcher’s shop – which meant working on Saturdays!

My Forest!

Had quite a lengthy spell with little or no football, but after a couple of my pub friends suggested I go to watch the team they support, it was back to the sport I love – and a drive up to Rochdale in October 1991 to see their beloved Stags win 2-0 at Spotland!  Again – I was hooked. Went to Stags home and away for a couple of seasons.

I had my first chance to catch a youth game when my 8-year-old son began playing with Hucknall Sports U9’s – who were to play in the newly initiated U9 league in season 1993/94.  Martin Brown managed the team, with me tagging along as his assistant and “medical” man! May have been under 9’s but they played on full size pitches with full size goals! I stayed with Hucknall Sports until the end of the 1996/97 season – a very successful spell with the lads who won umpteen trophies.

I also worked with YEL secretary and teacher Mr. Ian Hohl with his Broomhill school team – here’s Ian with his 1994/95 squad!

Also spent a couple of seasons working on the YEL committee and on the F.A. Youth council with Mr. Hohl - the nineties were a very busy decade for me. Work, Stags, Youth football, committee memberships and a Son to bring up!

Had a few years at Eastwood Town in the first years of the new decade – programme editor etc but began blogging at the beginning of the 2007-08 season and “ontheroad” became more and more time consuming. Loads of new venues and many, many new friends!
